Appreciate you having my back, I’ll leave that alone for now.

I’m buying a fishing rod for Xmas, gonna fish the Rocky River - might as well I can walk there in minutes.
Next spring I’m planting tomatoes again, and either cucumbers or green beans.
Removing all grass in my backyard and putting in creeping red thyme, way better for the world and it’s self sustaining.

Close to completing my indoor project, vintage stereo. Ditched the Sonos, nice technology but silly and overpriced for anything but a mansion, and frankly it doesn’t compare with hard wired sound.

Turntable, two integrated Marantz amps, Kenwood tuner and a Fisher receiver. All of it made pre-1980. I have what I need now I just look for opportunities to trade up for a better piece and some JBL speakers.

That river is still beautiful. Can’t image what it was like 200 years ago.

I’ve fished it a couple times. Best early in the season.

As a long time fisherman when I was in Cleveland the fall Steelhead run is going on now. We used to use egg sacks back in the day for bait but that was 38 years ago . Stop by a bait shop and find out what to use.

ocala I’m not prepared right now. 2026 hobby. Not even sure I’ll eat the fish out of that river, I’ve been told not to, not sure why maybe it’s a high lead or mercury water way?
Just something to do on a warm evening when the weather is nice. Get away from phones and concrete.

ocala I steelhead fish the Rocky River all the time with eggsacks from shore into February. Right off Cedar point rd under a bridge. First cast many times.

Good for you. I’m only doing the latter right now. Great, great series. BTW, did anyone notice and appreciate that Paul Giamatti has been doing the voice-over for quotes from John Adams? I’m going to have. to re-watch that series next.

Sadly, the guitar lessons are on hold for the next four weeks. Effing PICC line in my upper right arm is right in the way of any strumming.

Buck thanks. It’s part of a nostalgia phase I’m going through. I had a nice setup previously with a good modern AV receiver and Paradigm theater surround system (5 channels). But it doesn’t translate to listening to music properly. You don’t get the true stereo sound that the music was recorded in. Doing a lot of things the old fashioned way lately.

FYI for anyone who listens to a lot of music. If your phone is your source, meaning digital (and you stream) you’re getting a fraction of the music. Digital/streaming returns low quality compression of the musical data. Say a vinyl album has 100% of the data recorded, your phone/streaming is giving you about 30% of that same data. One might argue you can’t tell the difference when listening- but they’d be technically wrong. It just comes down to what your ear likes in comparison to the effort you want to put into it really. That was the whole driving force behind Neil Young’s effort to create his own service.

My hearing isn’t that good but I would love to hear a side by side comparison of what your talking about.
I use YouTube Music to stream. They have a setting, low med hi, for both cellular and wifi but TBH I can’t tell the difference.

Standard streaming services are not hi res, but most of them offer it for more money (Apple music, Amazon, Spotify,etc) plus there are specialty services like Tidal and Qobuz. Technically CDs have more detail as well, but it took them awhile to figure out how to properly record to digital, so some really old CDs sound like ass.

Vinyl will often sound more “right” because that’s the way your used to hearing it, but that has nothing to do with detail. One of the audio review sites tried a blind comparison awhile back and their conclusion was that music original recorded for vinyl generally sounded better on vinyl and music originally recorded for digital generally sounded better on digital.

They don’t give it to you though, that was Neil’s issue. Most people thought his boycott and pushback on the industry was political it wasn’t . It was about getting the actual music you paid for.
As far as what sounds better, I’ll say this. If you don’t know what you’re not getting from the musical data then you won’t miss it 99% of the time. But like I told Ocala, it’s simply about what you want to hear relative to the effort you want to put into it.

I have pretty good ears, I’ll die on the hill of “there is more depth from vinyl music 95% of the time” than digital music. Does that equate to sounding better all the time? No, there are so many factors to our subjective ears.

mechmat interesting- I went into Apple Music app settings to enable lossless function. It is an extreme data load and I got this message, which again gets to my point that using phones for music doesn’t give you all the music without strings attached.
Frankly who has or would bother with such an external device?

Vinyl is a PITA. It’s a hobby unto itself. Inefficient. A cassette deck or rocking in your vehicle is efficient access to music. The simplicity is important in that one can listen to more music.

DonnyUv2 It’s a matter of personal taste and for many like myself, vinyl was how I learned to listen to music and now I’m old and set in my ways.
I’m sure it’s different for those who started listening to music during the CD era.

It all comes down to what makes your ears happy.
I’ve tried the high quality Blu-Ray surround sound version of Quadrophenia, my go-to album for testing out a sound system, and my 50 year old vinyl original Brit cut of the album still makes my ear happier.

The Blu-Ray sounds cold as ice, the vinyl is like a warm blanket.

ocala I’ve spent countless hours in that River, that part doesn’t look familiar to me. But lots of places on that river look similar. I was usually north of Mastik when I was a river rat.

ocala ok. I spend some time each summer at the nature center just up the road from that. The Lagoon between the nature center and Cedar Pt road is pretty cool. I’ve seen bald eagles there a couple times.
I’m willing to bet my African Grey is the only AG that’s been to the top of the steps at the nature center and the only AG the bald Eagles doen there have ever seen.

Right. Generally streaming hi res you need a good quality hifi setup and a good Internet connect like home internet, not a phone network.

Most modern receivers support hi res streaming, but certainly not phones. You can also get a standalone streamer that will plug into standard analog inputs.

A DAC is a standard part of any digital audio device. Your phone, tv, CD players, etc all have one. The one in your phone is just not equipped for hi res. You can buy external DACs that will work.

So minimum to get hi res Apple Music into your particular setup would probably be iPhone or iPad (running on home wifi) > external DAC > analog input of amplifier.

Hi res uses about the same amount of data as 1080p video.
