The democrats were never going to get agreement of the subsidies, so just shut the govt down indefinitely? They needed to shut it down - otherwise they are seen as wanting to end the subsidies as well. I think that they should have waited at least until Thanksgiving for the real pressure to hit with holiday travel, but I still never saw/see a situation where Republicans agreed to extend the subsidies.
The people on this board pay attention to this stuff in much greater detail than Joe public. My parents didn’t even realize that my wife and I weren’t being paid. Shutting it down brings more of these issues to light to those types of people.
Edit: The part that most don’t understand is just how many people continue to work and not get paid. You had people calling in sick so that they could uber/Doordash to make money to pay bills. There was at least one ATC that committed suicide. These people keep things running so that Rand Paul can say things like, “Government’s still running fine without all of these people so maybe we should make this permanent” when he knows exactly how it works.
