They took apart and then reassembled the earthmovers that are used to carry the salt to the larger and faster salt elevator to the surface. When swing shift ended at midnight they placed the dynamite charges to blast the salt seams after everyone was up and out.
When I was there it was a Teamster Union workforce. I was making $4.19 an hour when most of my friends were getting less than two dollars.
